Exploring With Makerspace

The first and second grade classes are participating in a new  and improved Makerspace. Once a week, the classes get together to strengthen their imaginations which gets them thinking outside the box.  Weekly lessons have been prepared by the teachers to cover literature, math, science/technology, and social studies. A lesson is taught, then the students are cut loose to be creative and make projects that have to do with the lesson.

We started off the first Tuesday of school with a fun literature activity.  We read the book, “Back to School With Big Foot”, and discussed how hard it would be to actually be Big Foot.  Things like, how hard it is to find clothes that fit, getting a haircut, and finding shoes that fit! After we read the book, the students were put into groups and they had to design a shoe that would fit Big Foot.  Each group was given a cardboard cut out of a big foot and supplies needed to create a shoes large enough. There were some pretty creative designs!

The second week we did Math stations.  Each group was able to rotate through three different stations; one was working with tangrams, another was geoboards, and the final one was a fun new way to build with straws called Strawbees.  The kids really enjoyed the freedom to build and create!
