AHS Boys Basketball End Season, Earn Post Season Award

The Argonia Raiders Boys Basketball team concluded their season by losing to Attica at the 1A Div. II Sub-State semi-finals.  The Raiders had earned a spot in the semi-finals by beating Cunningham earlier in the week, 60-25.    Attica, the number one seed in the tournament, had received a bye to reach the semi-finals.

The Raiders played one of their better games of the season, especially in the first half.  During that first half, Argonia had led for much of the second quarter and was only down 2 points at the break.  This was a vast improvement from the first time they played Attica, where the Raiders were facing a 20 point deficit at the end of the first quarter.

Unfortunately, it was not enough.  The Raiders had a tough third quarter, where they were outscored 18-10.  That deficit proved too much to overcome, as Attica pulled away in the fourth quarter.  The Raiders ended up on the losing side, with a final score of 55-37.

The Raiders were led in scoring by Anthony Handlin, who tossed in 14 points.  Haden Craig contributed 10 points, playing one of his best games of the season.  Trevor Pierce, playing in his final game as a Raider, chipped in 4 points.

The Raiders concluded this season with a record of 5-15.  While this group of Senior Raiders didn’t win a tremendous amount of games this year, they did show vast improvement during their four years in high school.  When they were in 8th grade, they didn’t win a single game.  Contrast that with this year, where they won 5 and had a realistic chance of winning 7 or 8 if some games had gone different down the stretch.  As their coach, I was very proud of how hard this team worked.   And probably more important, this team was extremely enjoyable to coach and is made up of quality young men.

The team will unfortunately have to say good-bye to five seniors:  Trevor Pierce, Kamden Basinger, Haden Craig, Micah Carter, and Anthony Handlin.  Trevor, Kamden and Anthony have all been four-year lettermen, and have played valuable minutes since they were Freshmen.  Trevor finished his career at AHS in fine fashion, earning Second Team All-League Honors.  All have done a great job and will be sorely missed.

The Raiders look forward to next year, as they return 1 starter in Zach Haxton and a huge Sophomore class-to-be.   The Raiders would like to thank all the fans and parents who supported us this year.
