AHS SCHOLARS BOWL QUALIFIES FOR STATE

Girls Make Strong Showing at Regionals

They did it!!  The AHS Varsity Scholars Bowl team placed third at the Regional Meet held at South Barber High School on Thursday, February 1, 2018.

The third place finish qualifies the team for the State Tournament to be held at Ransom High School on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

The Regional Tournament consisted of a 10-team round robin competition.  The team was comprised of Seniors Catie Hammond, Cassidy Boese, Leah Fitch, Madalynn Rhea, and Junior Amelia Kollmeyer.  The all-girls team completed the event with a 6-3 record, tying them with Cunningham for third place.  The Raiders won the tiebreak since they had beaten Cunningham earlier in their head-to-head match.

When Coach Haxton was asked what he thought about the team’s finish, he said, “I was so proud of the way the girls hung in there.  Midway through the tournament we could have just shut down.  Rather, they stepped it up and won 4 of their last 5.  I couldn’t have asked for a more balanced attack, as all 5 contributed in key situations.”

It was uncertain as to when AHS last qualified for the state meet, if ever.  Haxton said, “My expectations continue to rise and we aren’t just happy to get there.  We hope to finish the season strong at State!!”  Here are their final results:

Round 1 vs. Stafford, 10-40 L

Round 2 vs. Ashland, 20-10 W

Round 3 vs. Cunningham, 20-0 W

Round 4 vs. South Barber, 20-30 L

Round 5 vs. Altoona Midway, 30-0 W

Round 6 vs. Central Christian, 10-20 L

Round 7 vs. Attica, 30-10 W

Round 8 vs. Fowler, 50-0 W

Round 9 vs. South Haven, 40-20 W

Argonia outscored their opponents 230-130 on the day.  Great job ladies!!
