SEVENTH GRADERS TAKE THE LOCAL SPELLING BEE

This year, the Local Junior High Spelling Bee was held in the high school gym on Friday, September 20th. There were 14 participants that chose to participate and made it past the pre-test. The students competing were:

6th Graders: Kara Jones, Toby Loveland, Chris Lumley, Tori Morrison, and Abigail Paxson

7th Graders: Grant Fisher, Lucas Griffith, Nelly Larson, Nicole Layton, and Lakelyn Love

8th Graders: Destiny Davis, Elvis Gregg, Brenten Kelley, and Dalton Morrison

It only took 5 rounds to declare the top two spellers that would compete in the next County Spelling Bee in October, but it actually took a total of 21 rounds of back-and-forth, tough competition to find out who would actually take the champion spot of our Local Spelling Bee. Grant Fisher and Lucas Griffith battled it out for another 16 rounds once they were the only ones left standing. They had to endure plenty of challenging and unknown words, such as “offal, piedmont, cooperage, siesta, calculus, vexation, stagnant, cliques, suffocate, cherished, homily, penitent, and damask” to finally reach the final anticipated championship round. Grant Fisher ended up stealing the top spot for first place by correctly spelling “sturgeon.”

We’d like to congratulate Grant and Lucas for their achievements today and wish them luck in representing the district at the Sumner County Spelling Bee to be held Wednesday, October 9th, 2019, at Wellington Middle School (605 N. A Street) at 9:30 am. This event will be open to the public and family members if you’d like to attend. Congrats, Grant and Lucas!
