Argonia Lady Raiders - 1A Girls’ Basketball Sub-State Runner Up

Sub State Semi-Finals

The St. Paul game was super exciting, but we let our lead slip away in the final minute. St. Paul took the lead with 44 seconds left to play, after we had led the entire game. We then managed to gain the lead by one (49-48) with 22 seconds remaining, and did not allow St. Paul to score. Our defense was the key to winning. Cora Vineyard led defensively with 3 steals and added 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 blocked shot. Aubreigh Haxton led with 7 rebounds while Alexis Vineyard added 5 and Karrlea Hessman 4.

Sub State Finals

Once again, Argonia led by 2 going into the fourth quarter. Waverly continued to foul and send us to the line where we shot 18 free throws in the final quarter alone. We were 10 of 18 in the final minutes and did not score a field goal in the fourth quarter. For the game, we were 19 of 39 from the line. If the free throw perspective is taken away, we did what it takes to beat a good team. Our seniors did an outstanding job and I was impressed with the team effort on both ends of the court. The girls’ gave it their all. I am super proud of each player on our team, whether they played or not. We have a great bench and it showed! For the game, Cora Vineyard led in scoring with 23 and added 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Karrlea Hessman scored 9 pts and added 6 rebounds. Alexis Vineyard scored 8 pts, Baylee Booker and Hope Casner added 4, and Aubreigh Haxton 2.

I never like for the season to end and it’s hard to say good bye to the senior class. Cora, Baylee, and Kaylee are fine young ladies that have been a joy to coach! There’s no doubt we will miss them, but we have a great team coming back next year and our experience this season has made our girls’ hungry for more of the same! We want another 20 plus win season and a shot at the 1A State Tournament. It is a realistic goal and we look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.
