UNAPPROVED MINUTES

May 14, 2018

 

Call to Order:  President Brian Fitch called the May 14, 2018, meeting to order at 8:00 pm with seven members present.  Those members were Rick Nafziger, Joe Allen, Brian Fitch, Shane Morrison, Sarah Vineyard, Dave Gaddie and Scott Greenwood.  Also present were Superintendent Julie McPherron, Principal Aaron Dewlen, and Clerk Sue Randall. 

 

Approve Agenda:  Rick Nafziger made a motion to approve the agenda as amended.  Shane Morrison seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Audience:  HS VB Coach, Hannah Hemberger, and several members of the high school volleyball team addressed the board about a uniform change they would like to make.  They left the meeting at 8:05.

 

Retirement Recognition:  Bonnie Dunn and Terry Lawrence arrived at the meeting at 8:05 pm.  The board presented them with gifts and thanked them for their many years of service to the district.  They left the meeting at 8:10 pm.

 

Consent Items:

 

Approval of Minutes:  Scott Greenwood moved to approve the regular meeting minutes held on April 9, 2018 and the special meeting minutes of April 16th, 18th, and 21st, 2018.  Joe Allen seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Approval of Warrants:  A motion was made by Sarah Vineyard to approve the warrants as presented.  Dave Gaddie seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Reports: 

 

HS Principal:  Mr. Dewlen gave the HS Principal report.  There are no attendance issues at this time. Our students that attended regional and state in music and forensics did a wonderful job receiving mostly I’s and II’s.  All seniors and two juniors will graduate on Sunday, May 20th.  He reported the end of the year programs have been going well. 

 

Mr. Dewlen left the meeting at 8:20 p.m.

 

Sumner County Interlocal 619:  Rick Nafziger gave a report of the regular monthly meeting of the Sumner County Interlocal 619 held on April 30, 2018. 

 

SCKESC:  Joe reported that the May meeting was cancelled due to weather.

Supt/Elem. Principal:  Dr. McPherron gave the Supt/Elem Principal report to the board. 

There are no attendance issues at this time.  She updated the board on the savings that has been made through the energy upgrades with ESP.  The district achieved a $28,000 savings which came primarily from lighting and meeting all our temperature set points.  The guaranteed savings was $27,500.  She also gave a legislative update.  School board resignation guidelines were provided as well as a timeline of year end events.

 

Discussion and/or Appropriate Action: 

 

Contract Approvals:  Sarah Vineyard made a motion to approve the following contracts:  Mark Russo – 6-12 Principal, Nicole Russo – 5th grade teacher, Beth Zahradnik – Kindergarten, Leah Fitch and Amber Webster – summer maintenance.  Shane Morrison seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Resignations:  A motion was made by Brian Fitch to accept Mindi Blokzyl’s resignation as Kindergarten teacher with many thanks for her 7 years of service.  Scott Greenwood seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

New Social Studies Curriculum:  A motion was made by Dave Gaddie approve the new high school social studies courses as discussed.  Sarah Vineyard seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Due to weather the board moved the meeting to the storm shelter at 9:05 pm. 

 

Attendance Policies:  Discussion, no action taken.

 

Finals Policy: Discussion, no action taken.

 

Board Policy GBO:  Brian Fitch made a motion to approve the updated policy GBO as discussed.  Shane Morrison seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Supplemental Positions:  Discussion, no action taken.

 

The board returned to the board room at 9:40 pm.

 

Volleyball Team Request:  Rick Nafziger made a motion to allow the team to change their uniforms as requested.  Sarah Vineyard seconded the motion.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

 Out of State Ed Tech Conference:  Discussion, no action taken.

 

Annual Maintenance Order:  A motion was made by Brian Fitch to approve the Pur-o-zone maintenance order.  The second was made by Shane Morrison.  Motion carried 7-0.

 

Resignation:  Scott Greenwood gave his resignation from the school board effective May 31, 2018.  Scott has served 25 years on the school board.

 

Adjournment:  The meeting adjourned at 10:35 pm.
