Junior High Awards assembly and Eighth Grade Promotion Ceremony May 23, 2017

Tuesday evening, May 23, 2017  junior high students, their friends and family gathered at the High School to celebrate their many accomplishments this year. The 2016 – 2017 Junior High Awards Assembly and Eighth Grade Promotion was a pride filled night as we congratulated 23 eighth graders for completing their junior high education and moving on to our high school. However there was no shortage of accomplishments highlighted prior to the promotion ceremony.

Mr. Luke Greenwood started the evening of awards and accolades with math club awards and letters, followed by Mr. Monte Haxton presenting scholar’s bowl. Mrs. Natalie Shirley presented cheer squad for both football and basketball seasons. The junior high choir and band both had outstanding performances. The choir sang two songs, “Who Seen the Wind” by Wagner and “Joyful Songs We Sing in Celebration” Arrangement by Liebergen. The choir’s performance was followed by the band playing two pieces: “Midnight Sky” by Balmages and “Incantation and Ritual” by Balmages. Both the band and the choir were directed by Miss Rachel Wattson.  Miss Wattson resumed the awards by handing out a plethora of vocal and band awards. Coach Wayne Vineyard recapped the football season as well as boy’s basketball, each team having many letters and participation awards. Girls’ basketball awards and letters were presented by assistant Coach Scott Morin. The eighth grade girls then gave Coach Morin a going away gift as this is his last year in Argonia. It was a signed and framed picture of the girls for him to remember them. Head coach Kim Quinn assisted the girls in their presentation to Coach Morin. The athletic awards were wrapped up by Coach Dennis Dickerson presenting track letters and participation awards. Mrs. Hurley presented the top 20% of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes. There was a five way tie for the number one rank in the eighth grade class with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). Mr. Dewlen presented the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Citizenship Awards. This award is voted on by the Argonia faculty and staff making it quite a testament to the citizenship of the recipients. Copper Topinka and Aubreigh Haxton were recognized for their outstanding citizenship. The end cap of the night was the eighth grade class of 2017 receiving their certificates of promotion to high school. The faculty and staff are excited to welcome these young people to the ranks of AHS.
