8TH GRADERS SWEEP LOCAL SPELLING BEE
Kaylee Schulte (Yearbook staff member)
Shelby Handlin (left) and Noah Phillips (right) will go on to represent Argonia in the Sumner County Spelling Bee.This year, the Local Junior High Spelling Bee was held in the HS gym on Monday, September 19th. There were 17 participants that chose to participate and made it past the pre-test. The students competing were:
6th Graders: Brenna Booker, Abigail Harbin, Aidan Kollmeyer, Jed Phillips, and Wesley Weishaar
7th Graders: Jadyn Gallardo, Alyssa Martin, Tori Sandoval, and Luke Schulte
8th Graders: Cindy Derixson, Gage Dewlen, Riley Fisher, Shelby Handlin, Aubreigh Haxton, Emma Huntley, Noah Phillips, and Savannah Shively
It took six rounds of tough competition to find out who the two students were that would go to represent the school in October. In Round 5, Savannah was the only speller left at the end of the round. Unfortunately, she was not able to correctly spell the anticipated championship word, “tropical.” This allowed all participants that had misspelled words in Round 5 to continue on in the competition. Savannah and four others would then be eliminated in Round 6, leaving Shelby Handlin and Noah Phillips as our local school representatives and the only ones left to fight until we had a definitive winner! This also confirmed that Shelby would go on to compete at the County Spelling Bee for the second year in a row. The two 8th graders would go back and forth for four more rounds, spelling some words correctly (alpaca, cyclone, guardian, and electrode) and misspelling others (mundane, billiards, collude, genteel, personnel, mosaic, and tapioca). It was Noah Phillips that would finally snatch the 1st Place Winner position after correctly spelling his anticipated championship word - “modular.” We’d like to congratulate Noah Phillips and Shelby Handlin on their achievements and wish them the best of luck representing Argonia for the Sumner County Spelling Bee at Wellington Middle School (605 N. A Street) on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 at 9:30 am. This event will be open to the public and family members if you’d like to attend. Congrats, Noah and Shelby!
