TOPEKA — School counselors will be highlighted Feb. 1-5 during National School Counseling Week.
The week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will focus attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors in the state of Kansas, as well as the nation.
National School Counseling Week highlights the impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
“Counselors are the bedrock with social-emotional learning and helping all students find their career passion,” said Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson. “The State Board of Education’s new vision clearly places a renewed emphasis in these areas. I want to thank all counselors for their tireless work to help all students succeed in school and later in life.”
Gov. Sam Brownback on Jan. 21 signed a proclamation naming Feb. 1-5 as School Counseling Week in Kansas.
“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career awareness in postsecondary options and personal/social skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, ASCA executive director. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”
More than 30,000 school counselors across the country, including 1,287 licensed school counselors (public and private) in Kansas, will be participating in the week’s festivities.
The American School Counselor Association is a worldwide nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, Va.
