CHOCOLATE FEVER

None of us like to get a fever but how would you feel about getting CHOCOLATE FEVER?

Henry Green LOVES chocolate – chocolate syrup on his pancakes, chocolate cake, anything chocolate.  In fact, Henry eats sooooo much chocolate that he catches Chocolate Fever.  After many adventures, Henry finally finds a cure.

During our novel reading we did a lot of fun learning activities.  We started off by graphing our favorite candy bar flavor – we had lots of different candy bar choices with Hershey’s Milk Chocolate being the favorite.

Next we estimated how many candy kisses were in the bag – Heidi was the closest with a guess of 64  - the actual amount was 70.  Heidi was so “sweet” to share with the entire class.

The students were excited to learn about how chocolate was invented.  The most famous chocolate company is Hershey’s.  The students researched and constructed a timeline of all the events of Mr. Milton Hershey’s life:

1857 – Mr. Hershey is born

1900 – First Hershey candy bar is made

1903 – Mr. Hershey builds his factory

1907 – First candy kisses are made

1908 – Hershey Almond Bar is made

1925 – Mr. Goodbar is made

1926 – Chocolate Syrup is made

1938 – Krackel Bar is made

1971 – Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Bar is made

1989 – Symphony Bar is made

1994 – Cookies & Cream Bar is made

We were all very happy that Mr. Hershey invented all these yummy chocolate treats!

With the unit being about Chocolate we did lots of taste testing activities.  Our first test tasting activity would be to compare White Chocolate, Milk Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate.  Students had to try each type of chocolate and then vote on their favorite.  Surprisingly, Dark Chocolate came out the winner.

Our next taste test would be Chocolate Chip Cookies.  As students ate their cookies they had to write down words to describe their cookies.  With these words, students wrote Haiku poems.  Here are a few of those poems:

I LOVE COOKIES, YUM!

THEY ARE DELICIOUS AND GOOD,

COOKIES ARE TASTY! By Brittany

CHOCOLATE IS GOOD,

IT IS DELICIOUS AND SWEET.

ICE CREAM IS BETTER! By Jesse

YOU ARE SO YUMMY!

OH COOKIES, I LOVE YOUR TASTE.

OH, I LIKE COOKIES! By Gabe

To finish up our unit we made our own Chocolate Cookbook.  What great recipes were added to our cookbook…lots of yummy, chocolaty recipes.  We decided to make one of our recipes – NO BAKE COOKIES!  With the help of our “sweet” cooks, Tami and Sara, the students did an excellent job of cooking.  Be sure to check out our slideshow.Slideshow Icon CHOCOLATE FEVER
