Preschoolers Learn about Fire Prevention

By Linda Stow

The week of October 6th was fire prevention week.  We started the week off by studying what to do if your clothes would catch on fire.  The kids had fun practicing with this as we learned to Stop, Drop, and Roll.  We then went over what number you should dial if you needed help from the police or the firemen.  We did a color sheet on dialing 911 and practiced saying it as we went throughout the week.  Wednesday, was our big day as we walked to the fire station to see the firemen and Fire Pup.  While we were there the kids gladly showed the firemen how to Stop, Drop, and Roll and to call 911 for help. They were each allowed to spray water from the fire truck hose which was a real treat.  The firemen dressed up in their uniform with their air masks on so the kids would know what to expect if they needed to be saved in a fire.  The class loaded up on the fire truck and got to ride back to school with Fire Pup.  We ended the week by singing songs, making a fire truck, and reading fire related books.  Ask your child to sing you the fire truck song that they learned from our iPad, they really enjoyed it! We would like to thank the fire station for the bag of goodies that they gave each student and for the time spent with the students teaching them about fire safety.
