A girl. An iguana. An island. And e-mail. Sound intriguing?

In our 2nd and 3rd grade Raider Reading group we read the novel, Nim’s Island.   What an adventure Nim took us on while we read this suspenseful novel!

Nim was a modern-day Robinson Crusoe who lives on the most beautiful island in the world (whose location is a closely guarded secret),  who could chop down bananas with a machete, climb tall palm trees and had the greatest pets any girl could ever ask for….a sea lion named Selkie, an iguana named Fred, and a sea turtle named Chica.  Nim’s dad is a scientist who often sails off leaving Nim all alone on the island.  On one of Nim’s dads adventures, his ship wrecks and Nim is left on the island all alone except she does have the email of a famous writer, Alex Rover,  whom she keeps in contact with during all the adventures and mishaps that occur while her dad is away at sea.    A few of those mishaps are visiting tourists aboard a cruise ship, an erupting volcano and a violent hurricane.  What will become of Nim, her pets, Alex Rover, her Dad and their tropical island?  You’ll have to read the book and find out.

During the reading of our novel we made our own maps of our own tropical island and wrote about what would be on our tropical island….I would love to visit some of my student’s islands.  What fun and adventure!  We also talked about what we would bring on our tropical islands….I don’t think all the Xboxes, phones and ipads will work.

Our year in Raider Reading has been an adventure just like Nim’s – here’s to an adventurous summer break!
