NOW THAT'S SOME PIG!

In our 2nd/3rd grade Raider Reading group we have been reading the novel Charlotte’s Web.  Wilbur, the pig, was born a runt and was going to be put down until Fern was allowed to lovingly raise him until he became too big.  Wilbur then became a barn pig at the Zuckerman’s farm and he became very bored and lonely.  When speaking about pigs, I realized that some of the students had never been around a REAL pig so what better way to get a learning experience than hands-on experience.

Mr. Joe Allen brought two baby piglets into our classroom and presented a slideshow about his pig farm.  The children learned a lot of information about pigs.  After the presentation, Mr. Allen let the students pet the baby pigs.  The baby pigs squealed and grunted and we decided that they might not like being in school.

We are excited to continue reading our novel and see what happens to Wilbur, the barn pig.  We will compare what we read in our novel to Mr. Allen’s information and see if there are any similarities/differences.

 Thank you, Mr. Allen.  We really enjoyed you taking time out of your busy schedule and coming to our classroom.  We hope the pigs had a good time too!
