Second Grade News

by Keri Dickerson

January 19, 2010

The second graders have been learning about “People at Work” in our social studies textbook.  The main question throughout the lesson has been what are ways people earn, spend and save money? Some terminology they have been introduced to is producers, consumers, income, price, wants and needs.  It has been a fun unit as students have learned a lot about money.  They were quick to decide that they were all consumers.  They could all relate to spending money at Wal-Mart.  We listed our needs in order to survive the day to day living but they had far more fun listing all of their wants!  We read “The Milkmaid”, which is a tale told in Mexico and many other countries.  As we finished ready the tale they were able to relate to the moral of the story, which was, “We may not get all we want, but we still have what we need.”  As we ended the unit it was nice to see them all believe that they were very fortunate to have nice things and to live in a great community.
