Attention all males: If you are 18 and over, or within 30 days of your 18th birthday, you must register with the selective service at www.sss.gov or go to your local post office. If you are already 18 and haven’t registered yet, do so immediately. For question call 847-688-6888. You are breaking the law if you don’t register and could be sent to prison for up to 5 years, may be fined up $250,000 and you may not qualify for federal student grants or loans for college.
State and Local Scholarships:
Sumner-Cowley Electric Coop., Inc. Scholarships (1 $1500 & 1 $1,000). Please fill out ASAP if your parents have this electric company. Deadline is Jan. 29, 2010. Must write a 600 word essay and fill out the application.
Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (KACRAO) is offering
Quality Leadership Scholarship – 4 available for $500.00. Must have a 3.25 GPA, 22 ACT, provide evidence of leadership experience. May go to www.kacrao.org for the application and a list of winners (also receive a letter). Deadline is 3-12-10.
Kanokla Telephone Association (For those who have Kanokla Telephone Service) is offering 8 $1,000.00 scholarships, 4 in KS and 4 in OK. See counselor for application if you are a member. The deadline is April 1, 2010.
PRIMO (Public Relations Independent Marketing Organization) is offering 3 scholarships for $500.00. Preference will be to those students majoring in Marketing, Public Relations, or any telecommunications fields. Kanokla is an active member of PRIMO and scholarships must be turned in to the Kanokla Telephone Association Office in Caldwell. Applications are due by March 1, 2010
Haviland Telephone Company, Inc. 1 $100.00 will be available for an Argonia student. Preference given to students pursuing careers in telecommunications, applied sciences, or technology. 1 will be guaranteed for Argonia. Deadline is April 15, 2010.
Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) (Both Kanokla and Haviland Telephone Company are members of the FRS. If a student from the service areas are selected to receive one of the 25 national scholarships ($2,000 each), then the FRS will contribute an additional $500.00. See counselor for application Preference will be given to individuals expressing an interest to return to a rural area to work following graduation. FRS scholarship applications should be sent directly to FRS, postmarked no later than March 1, 2010.
Wellington Community Theatre Scholarship for Sumner County Students. 1-$1,000.00 scholarshipavailable. To apply please send cover letter, theatre resume (technical and acting) as well as two letters of recommendation, one being from a former director to: Wellington Community Theatre, P.O. Box 573, Wellington, KS 67152. Deadline is April 15, 2010.
Kansas Junior Golf Scholarship- This is an academic scholarship, students must have participated in junior golf activities, and high school golf and are based on leadership, written essay, and financial aid. The grant is $1250 per year and is renewable up to 4 years. Go to www.kansasgolf.org and click on KS Golf Foundation and follow the links for Scholarships. 2009 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest. jFor information go to www.jfklibrary.org. ($5,000-1st place, $1,000-2nd place, and $500.00 for 5 finalists. Winner gets an all expense-paid trip to Boston.
The deadline is January 10, 2010.
College Scholarship Information
KSU- Acacia Scholarships: Leadership scholarship for $1,000 and 2 for $500.00 for incoming freshmen. See counselor for application. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2010.
Barton County Community College-Sports Medicine Department, Student Athletic Trainer Position Tuition and Books. Must maintain a 2.0 GPA, take a minimum of 12 semester hours to renew for each semester. Go to http://www.bartonccc.edu/sports/sportsmedicine/default.htm to check out the program and complete the questionnaire.
Bethany College-Scholarships available based on GPA and ACT Score. Contact Office of Admissions and Financial Aid if interested.
