General Information

 

For February ACT Exam, the registration deadline is January 5, 2010.

 

College Goal Sunday-February 21, 2010 from 2:00-4:00 at several locations.  Wichita has 2 locations and there are other numerous locations around the state.  From 2:00-4:00 pm, Financial Aid Counselors will be available to help you apply for a Department of Education PIN and/or complete your 2010-2011 Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Go to www.collegegoal.org to register and for locations.  Could win a $500.00 scholarship for attending.  Text CGS to 25877 for a College Goal Sunday reminder. 

 

FAFSA FORMS:  The school or counselor will no longer receive FAFSA forms by mail for the students to fill out.  The students/parents must apply for pin numbers and order up to three forms online.  The preferred method is to fill out the forms online.  If you do not have a computer at home, then you may wish to use the public library.  If this is not an option, please contact the counselor or financial aide office at the college your child will be attending.  The web sites have changed to www.fafsa.gov and www.pin.gov

Wichita Area Technical College-Local area work forces have a high demand for aviation, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and construction jobs.  WATC offers training in these areas.  I have a DVD on this if interested.

Scholarship Information

 

(These are local county scholarships and I would recommend that you fill them out if you qualify).

Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Chase Scholarship-Top 20% ACT Score/Top 10% of Class-Sumner County Bar Assoc. will select individual/Sumner County Seniors Only-$1,000 for 1 year only non-renewable-Deadline on or before January 8, 2010 (Please turn in to counselor by the end of this day).

 

The Loofbourrow Educational Trust Scholarship (Same form as Chase Scholarship). Sumner County Students only.  If you qualified to fill out the Chase Scholarship, you need not fill out the Loofbourrow Form, but copy it.   The amount will be determined later, but previously was $1,000.00  and is not based on same requirements as the Chase .  This one used to be renewable.  Deadline on or before January 8, 2010 (Please turn in to counselor by this date). 

 

Deltapine My Future in Cotton Scholarship-9 $1,000 scholarships available.  Essays need to be 500 words or less.  Go to www.myfutureincotton.com for complete details.  Deadline is December 1, 2009.

 

ESA Foundation Scholarships/Numerous scholarships available from $300 to $1,000.   Read handout to be sure of your eligibility (22 ACT and 3.0GPA) and show financial need.  Deadline of all materials and application is February 1, 2010.

 

Kansas Teaching Profession Scholarships-$4,000 per year (for a total of $16,000).  Eligible students must have a 3.25 GPA or receive a score above the 75th percentile on an admissions test.  TEACH Grant recipients must teach in high need schools and high need fields for a minimum of four years within the eight years after finishing the program.  The following shortage fields are targeted to TEACH Grants:  mathematics, science, foreign language, special education, bilingual education, reading specialists, and other documented high need fields.   It is expected that the Department of Education will issue regulations for implementation.  There are a lot of hoops to jump through to get this grant.  You must have been a Kansas Scholars Curriculum Completer or followed the Kansas State Rigorous Curriculum (same as other, except 1 less foreign language and science variance).  Some colleges do not allow the grant for Freshmen or Sophomores. 

 

Burger King Scholars Program- 700 $1,000 Scholarships available- to apply go to www.bk.com/scholars  and fill out the application online.  Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA, work at least 15 hours a week, 40 weeks per year, be actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need, and plan to enroll in a 2 or 4 year college, vo-tech program in the fall.  Deadline is February 1, 2010.

 

National Annual CO-OP Scholarship Program- NCCE Partner Colleges- 200 $6,000 scholarships (renewable)  Go to www.co-op.edu for application and details.  Specific college listing as well.   Must have 3.5 GPA, application and essay.  Deadline is February 15, 2010.    

 

KFC Colonel’s Scholars-$5,000 per year for tuition, fees, books, & room and board .  Must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree, minimum of 2.75 GPA, Graduate in 09, US Citizen and enroll in a public, in state college or university. Go to www.kfcscholars.org for online application, which is available from December 1, 2009 to February 10, 2010. 

 

 AXA Achievement Scholarship  (US News & World Report)- $10,000 national scholarships to 52 students, 1 in each state plus Puerto Rico and Washington D.C./$15,000 to 10 national recipients.  The national recipients will receive a computer for college and be offered internships at AXA offices for a total of $25,000.00.  Winners are known as AXA Achievers.  Go to www.axa-achievement.com for more details and how to apply.  Deadline is February 15, 2010.

 

2010 Sam Walton Community Scholarship will be available on-line from November 1, 2009 through January 31, 2010.  More information, printable online instructions, and the link to apply for these and other Wal-Mart Foundation programs are found at www.walmartfoundation.org.  The access code (SWCS) must be used to access this application process.  Please also check the same web address for scholarship opportunities if associates and children of associates of a Wal-Mart store.  The deadline is January 31, 2010.

 

SAE Engineering Scholarship –Several Scholarships available.  See me or go to http://sae.org/students/engschlr.htm deadline is on December 1, 2010.

College Scholarships

 

Butler Community College Scholarships available in the Humanities and Fine Arts Departments.  Have participation scholarship auditions for music, theatre, dance, and journalism on February 6, 2010 or March 5, 2010, and visual arts is held only on March 5.    Please call 316-322-3328 for information or email lpatton@butlercc.eduNote students don’t have to major in these areas to receive the scholarships.  See counselor for paper applications.

 

Washburn University-Leadership Scholarship 26ACT, 3.5 GPA.  Application due by 12/15/10.

 

Baker University-Several Foundation scholarships available based on ACT Score and GPA.  Amount per year is $6,000 to $8,000.00and Several Academic Scholarships available ranging from $1,000 to Full Tuition Scholarship available.  Go to www.bakeru.edu/admissions for more details.

 

School of Visual Arts Scholarships-Go to www.sva.edu for more information.  Must be completed by February 1, 2010.
