Minutes

    May 11, 2009

 8:00 p.m. 

 

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by President Lana Parks with six members present. Those members present were Joe Allen, Scott Greenwood, Ron Work, Randy Simon, Rick Nafziger, and Lana Parks. Robert Pike was absent.  Also present were Mary Work, Sandy Bruce, Michelle and Matt Harsh, Sarah Vineyard, Superintendent Julie Dolley, Principals Travis Riebel and Dennis Murray, and Linda White.

 

7th Grade Kansas Magazine Presentation: Matt Harsh and Sandy Bruce gave a presentation to the board about the magazine the seventh graders entered in the Kansas Magazine competition. 

 

Sandy Bruce left the meeting at 8:10 p.m.

 

Board presentation for retiring teacher, Mary Work:  President Lana Parks presented a plaque honoring retiring teacher Mary Work for her thirty-six years of teaching for Argonia Public Schools.

 

Mrs. Work, Michelle Harsh, and Matt Harsh left the meeting at 8:17 p.m.

 

Approve Agenda:  Motion by Scott Greenwood, seconded by Lana Parks to approve the agenda as amended.  Motion carried 6-0.

            

Consent Items

 

Approval of Minutes of Previous Meeting:  Motion by Rick Nafziger, seconded by Randy Simon to approve the minutes of the April 13, 2009 meeting as presented.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

Approval of Warrants:  Motion by Joe Allen and seconded by Scott Greenwood to approve paying the warrants as presented.  Motion carried 6-0.

Reports

 

Elementary Principal:  Mr. Murray informed the board of events at the elementary school including the AYP Report, the students being on KAKE TV, the Pre-K screening, Field Day, elementary field trips, the Honors Program May 18th, Kindergarten Graduation May 21st, and the AYP bowling trip to Anthony.

            

H.S. Principal:  Mr. Riebel reported to the board on the KSHSAA Summer Coaching Guidelines, the AYP report, a course approval, some upcoming events including the Activities Banquet, Senior Graduation May 17th, the retirement party for Mrs. Work, and the State Track Meet on May 29th and 30th. Motion by Joe Allen and seconded by Lana Parks to approve the addition to the social studies curriculum as discussed.  Motion carried 6-0.    

 

Sumner County Interlocal 619:  Rick Nafziger gave a report on the meeting held at

the Sumner County Interlocal #619 office in Wellington.

 

SCKESC:  Lana Parks gave a report on the meeting held in Clearwater at the service center.

 

Superintendent:  Superintendent Dolley updated the board on the State budget cuts and discussed some proposed changes to the KPERS law.

            

Discussion and/or Appropriate Action

 

Ron Work excused himself at 10:15 p.m.

 

Early Retirement Policy:  Motion by Scott Greenwood and seconded by Joe Allen to approve the Early Retirement Policy as amended.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

Ron Work returned to the meeting at 10:30 p.m.

 

Certified Contract Ratification(s): Discussion.  No action taken.

 

2009-2010 Calendar: Discussion.  No action taken.

 

Certified and Classified Salaries: Motion by Ron Work, seconded by Rick Nafziger to freeze certified and classified wages as discussed.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

Budget Adjustments:  Discussion.  No action taken.                  

 

Supplemental Resignation:  Motion by Ron Work, seconded by Scott Greenwood to accept the resignation of Jon Mead as Student Council Sponsor with thanks.  Motion carried 6-0.

 

Adjournment: Motion by Ron Work, seconded by Scott Greenwood to adjourn the meeting at 11:55 p.m.  Motion carried 6-0.
