Connecting from
our Second Grade Class to Nigeria
On Monday, April 13, Beverly Sellers came to visit our first and
second grade classroom. Her son, Patrick, is attending school in
Nigeria this year. We were able to call Patrick as he was on a two
week break from school to visit with him about his life in Africa.
Patrick was excited to hear that his old school was on the other
end of the speaker phone to chat with him about life in Africa. The
students loved asking questions about his school day and his free
time. Patrick told the kids that just the other day he opened the
classroom door to find a cobra sitting there. He quickly shut the
door and they called someone to come and take care of the snake.
Patrick has many of the same subjects that we do and his favorite
was fine arts. He is learning to speak French and his tribal
language. He says it is difficult to learn.
The temperature there is usually very warm, and humid. They have a
rainy season with quite large rain drops as he noted. He had been
running outside as it began to rain. He said they drops felt as
large as a dime!
Most people get around on smaller motorcycles. The students wanted
to know about animals there and he told them that cats were
considered evil and dogs were vicious. The dogs were not to be
petted because they were there to do a job and would attack if you
tried to pet them.
Patrick seems to be doing great and it was wonderful to visit with
him. The students enjoyed asking questions and hearing about his
daily activities. We truly appreciate Beverly coming and calling
Patrick so we could learn more about another life style.
