Different Types of Soils

Different Types of Soils
The second grade class has been learning about different types of soils in their Earth Science Unit. We have been learning about natural resources such as soil, sand and minerals. In the unit we will also learn about erosion, pollution and recycling. We were inquiring about how soils are different in a small lab experiment. The students observed the difference in potting soil and sand. First we looked to see how they felt, looked and smelled. After those observations we used our small hand magnifying glasses to get a closer look at the soils. In the end of our observation we added a small amount of water to each of the soil samples and observed the changes made by the liquid. Our results were that both soils were made of tiny particles. The sand was coarser, lighter in color and absorbs water more slowly than the potting soil.
